We’ve all eaten delicious yoghurts
and ice creams from Losely Park so we are very lucky
to be visiting the bakery where head baker Steve Cheseman
will demonstrate cake making and hopefully we’ll
have some samples! The bakery is left, behind the main
house. Please be prompt as Mr Cheseman is very kind to
be staying late at work for our benefit.

Christmas Party
Dorking Rugby Club
It’s
been fun so far at BYF, swimming was a laugh even though the
Dorking pool is boring, when there are 16 of you and almost
nobody else it’s not too bad.
On indoor games night everybody
liked the clam game best, it’s noisy, I wonder if that’s
why.
Then we had the AGM, our new
club officers are
Sherri Harding - secretary,
Suzie Brint – chairman,
Sophie Clowser
- vice chairman
and our club leader is Helen
Clarke.
We agreed that membership fees
would stay at £35 a year which is
really cheap.
The next week we went to Loseley
Farm, it was a horrible evening and really dark and rainy which
put some
parents off driving but those of us who made it had a great
time. The chef, Mr Cheeseman showed us how they made the
cakes, we had a chocolate fudge cake to decorate then. There
were
chocolate curls, flakes, fudge topping and chocolate chips
and our cakes were twice as big by the time we’d piled
on the toppings! Ryan had most of the fudge topping all over
him, it was cool and we brought the cakes home, they were delicious.
Next we had a video and a talk
from the UK headquarters of the Sepilok Orang-Utan appeal.
The babies are cute. Did you
know that Orang-Utan means man of the forest and we share
96% of our genes with them? BYF adopted an orphan baby called
Naru
and we have a photo of him and an adoption certificate, we’ll
get newsletters about his progress and more photos and everyone
wants to buy the Sepilok calendar.
Last week we went to tae
kwon do, and we learnt how to fight off an attacker who grabbed
us round the neck or by both our arms, we were shown how
to use the attacker’s strength against him. We also learnt
some basic kicks and punches and we saw the black belts demonstrate
stuff an expert can do, it was impressive.
So come and join
in!!!!!!!!!

Cowpie
Rally 2004
The Cowpie Rally 2004 has finally
been cancelled. Although efforts to re-schedule this popular
event have been made it has not been possible to re-arrange
it. The next Cowpie will be held next year on May 8th.
5 June 2004
Cowpie
Revisited
The Cowpie Rally 2004 has been
re-scheduled for Sunday August 22nd. Most of the activities
and stalls have been able to move their dates and sterling
efforts by Surrey Young Farmers means this fun day out for
all the family will now take place after all. Keep an eye on
more news on the web.
17 May 2004
Cowpie
Country Show Cancelled
The very popular Cowpie Country
Show, attended by some 20,000 people and held off Snowerhill
Road, Gadbrook, Betchworth has been cancelled due to the waterlogging
of the
fields. Attempts
to drain the field have been unsuccessful and with more rain
expected in the next 48hrs, Surrey Young Farmers have had to
cancel the event.
It's a particular blow to the
Brockham Young Farmers who have been working very hard to rear
chicks and get competitions ready in time for the weekend.
Helen Clarke said, "It's such a disappointment for the children.
They have looked forward to this event for so long and they
have produced some very exciting pieces for the competitions."
Some consolation is at hand.
There is to be a Young Farmers Fun Day on 23rd May to be held
at Norbury Park Farm, Mickleham from 2.00pm until 5.00pm.
The events already planned for
the Funday will take place but the competitions and chick rearing
scheduled for the Cowpie will be held at the Funday.
More details of the Funday to
follow.
6 May 2004
In
preparation for the Cowpie on 9th May Rachel Wright rears a
couple of rather camera shy chicks!
Brockham Young Farmers have
high hopes of taking more prizes at this year's event in Betchworth.

Brockham
Young Farmers 'Tower of 20s'
This term
Brockham Young Farmers Club has chosen to support ‘ The Fountain Centre’ at
St. Luke’s Cancer Centre, Guildford.
The Fountain Centre provides
a caring environment for patients newly diagnosed with cancer,
offering holistic complementary therapies
and an information facility. There are books and videos to
be borrowed, and staff and volunteers are on hand to answer questions
and give
reassurance. This is only one of two such centres in the country
and a much needed resource.
Each member has pledged to fill
a smartie tube with 20p pieces, with the help of friends
and members of family. To reach
our modest target
of £100, we simply need to build a tower of twenty
pence pieces one metre high.
With about 20 collecting tubes
out,
we can expect to meet and exceed our original goal to help
improve
the
facilities for people living with cancer in and around
Surrey.
Join in our 'Tower of 20s' campaign
- all you need is an empty Smarties tube! If you or your
organisation would like to be involved with the
'Tower of 20s', please contact Brockham Young Farmers
either
by phone or email and make a difference.
Young Farmers all over Surrey are
getting ready for the Cowpie Show. Last year Brockham was a new
club and it was the first Cowpie for the members and the leader,
but we were very enthusiastic! It was a very busy day because the
same few members were doing nearly all the competitions and so
we had a packed schedule.
We rushed from one place to another
and in between had to dash along and check our ducks were okay.
It was a very good day for us! Brockham
were 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the junior animal rearing. We won
every single prize! Brockham also won the sand sculpture competition
and the face painting. We came second in the collage, painting
and pebble paperweight competitions.
The tug of war was great fun and
we still won our heat in that!!!
So we are all keen to get started
on this year's competitions.
We will have our new rugby shirts
in BYF navy and heather colurs, there are more of us and we've
got a bit of experience, so watch out
the
rest
of
Surrey!
BYF Laura Clarke winning design on
Cowpie 2004 programme cover
At the Indoor rally (which is a
sort of warm up for the Cowpie), held in November ar Merrist Wood,
BYF did really well. Sophie and Chris Clowser were 2nd and 3rd
in the novelty cake competitio, Laura Clarke was 2nd for her design
for the competition schedule cover and Brockham were first for
their club write up which will appear in the Cowpie programme.
But best of all, the cover for the
Cowpie programme, which thousands of people will buy, was designed
by BYF Laura Clarke who won the design competition!!

February 2004
Indoor
Rally
At
the Indoor Rally the young farmers had 30 minutes to dress one
another as scarecrows
with items that they had brought with them. (Ed. Wouldn't
have thought it takes that long - my daughter only takes 5 minutes!
- only kidding!). Ruby
dressed Jennifer Clarke and Sarah dressed Chris. A similar competition
will be held at the Cowpie Show on May 9th in Betchworth, but
this time it will be on the theme of Star Wars.

Halloween
Party 2003
For
Halloween, the Young Farmers held a spooky party. But the Flour
Cake game proved to be a little messier than intended!
