Summer
is here and the children are enjoying using the school fields as
they play on the Eco trail and adventure playground, and prepare
for Sports Day. The Cricket and swimming season is well underway.
The quiet area is very popular with its solar powered water feature
and sunshade. The Gardening Club have been busy planting up the flower
tubs, weeding and looking after their vegetable plot.
Infant topics
this term focus on science, geography and history, and the children
will be going out for lots of walks; parents are
needed to help with these so if you have any availability please
contact the school.
The Upper Juniors are studying mountains, and
over 50 children are off to France. They leave on 13 June for Stella
Plage, South of Le
Touquet, where they will be applying their French speaking skills!!
As part of the County Council’s campaign to promote safety,
Year 2 have the chance to bring in their bikes for a day on June
9th to learn about cycling safety, whilst Year R will have the chance
to develop their road awareness through play.
FOBS has helped the
school to provide each class with an interactive whiteboard. These
allow all the children to see and interact with
websites, CD ROMs, and a range of other resources. Apart from
this FOBS has supplied sports bibs and has approved funding for
the
Adventure Playground.
Happy New Year from all at Brockham School! We hope you had a wonderful
Christmas and are looking forward to the year ahead.
The end of last term was as frantic as usual, but thoroughly
enjoyable and great fun. Many thanks to all of you who supported
our Christmas
Fair! It was a superb event and we are all very grateful to FOBS
for their organisation and effort. We raised an excellent total
in excess of £2,000. The Nativity Play was a delight as ever – it
is such a special part of the season for all us proud parents!
And the parties all went off extremely well, as did the traditional
Carol
Service at Christ Church.
So now, as is usual after the excitement
and frantic activity of the Christmas term, January is a fairly
quiet month. Term starts
on the 4th and the children settle back into their routines with
the only trip this month being made by Years 5 and 6 to the water
reservoir at Bough Beech in Kent. This is part of their topic on
water and rivers and they will tour the plant learning about water
conservation and purification.
More dates for special events as
well as a wealth of other information can be found on our website
at www.brockham.surrey.sch.uk .

And
so we draw to the end of another school year. But our calendar
of events is not quite over yet! Who, for instance, could forget
last year’s barn dance? Well, we have scheduled a repeat
performance for Saturday 17th July, with the band D’Arcy
Spice once again playing and calling for us. It was a huge success
last year and enjoyed by everyone so do make a date in your diary
to come along.
Talking of performances, the school production
of “Moving
On” takes
place on Tuesday 6th and Thursday 8th July at 7p.m. These productions
are always of outstanding quality, so look out for photographs
and details on the website. Also this month there is the District
Athletics
Tournament at Pixham on the 1st, the District Rounders Tournament
at Powell-Corderoy School on the 8th and our own school Sports
Day (infants in the morning, juniors in the afternoon) on the
15th.
It is also an important time for those pupils
who will be joining
us next year. On July 6th there is a meeting for the parents
of children entering the Junior Department in September, and on
the
14th there
is an induction morning for all new entrants (except Reception
class). Also, Tuesday 13th July is Open Evening.
Finally, Year 6 have their
farewell barbecue on Tuesday 20th before we all break up at 1.05p.m.
on Wednesday 21st July. We wish you a
wonderful Summer Holiday and see you when school resumes on September
1st!

June
is quite an eventful month for Brockham. On the 7th and 8th Years
3 and 4 respectively are spending the day at the Educational
Field Centre at Boxhill for an invaluable day of structured activities
exploring this wonderful, diverse local environment. Then on
June
15th Year 6 will set off on their eagerly awaited four-day trip
to France. Year 5 also have a day out on the 23rd, visiting ‘Tate
Britain’.
Our sporting activities continue with a Kwik
Cricket tournament on Brockham cricket pitch on the 24th, for which
we
wish our team the
best of luck.
The Barnardo’s charity is holding a concert
at The Albert Hall on June 25th and we are very proud that our
choir has been invited
to sing there that evening. Once again we wish them all the best.
June 21st is an Inset Day, which means the children all have
a day off! And on the 29th we invite the parents of all children
who will
be new to the school in September to come and have a look round.
On
the last day of the month, not only will our school eco-committee
be visiting the Earth Summit Meeting, but the Fire Brigade will
also be here to talk to Years 2 and 5, and the whole school will
be treated to the music of a steel band in the afternoon!
And
finally, our annual Summer Fair takes place on June 26th. This
is always a fantastic family event and we invite you all
to come
along!

May
is an important month in the school calendar because it is when
teachers and pupils alike are tested as years 2 and 6 take their
SATS. As ever we are sure that they will all perform to their best
abilities and achieve admirable results, but we wish them luck
all the same! Year 6 begin theirs on May 10th and Year 2 on May
17th.
Before they sit their SATS, however, Year 2 can
look forward to a visit to the National Gallery on May 13th, and
our big event this month is the Annual Maypole Dancing, to be held,
weather permitting, on the village green.
As
usual the school continues to raise money for various charities
including Cancer Research and NCH and last term we totalled over £1,000;
this is in addition to the money raised by FOBS through such things
as an Alphabet competition, a Mother’s Day Sale and the Easter
Egg Hunt – all of which goes to the school itself.

Last
month saw a very successful week’s visit to the
Isle of Wight by Year 5. They had wonderful weather and
all
thoroughly enjoyed
themselves, behaving well and with no mishaps!
We also celebrated
World Book Week in style with a huge book –swapping event
and the whole school dressing up as a character from their favourite
book. It was quite a sight and there were some truly amazing costumes.
Well done to everybody!
But April will now be a quiet month for
Brockham School as we are away for the Easter Holidays from the
2nd until the 19th.
Our major
event then, however, is the eagerly awaited swimming gala on
the 28th, the first in our new pool!
May we wish you all a Happy Easter!

March
is a busy month for the school as we take part in a variety of
activities from the annual visit by Year 5 to the Isle of Wight
on March 1st to the Dorking Schools Group football and netball
tournaments for Years 5 and 6. Our choir are also at Dorking Halls
on March 15th, while Year 6 attend a Junior Citizen workshop at
Epsom Racecourse on 24th March. On the more academic side, we are
once again visited by the Life Education Bus for the week beginning
8th March, and Year 4 are attending an Egyptian workshop on March
9th.
Friends Of Brockham School continue with their
fantastic work raising funds for the school and have just purchased
a number
of
new reading
books for
Years 4
and 5. These have all been covered with sticky back plastic by volunteers.
Many thanks! And FOBS will be holding a Mothers Day Sale for the
children on March 19th.
Arts Week, held in January was a huge success,
and thank you to everyone who helped out with painting, writing,
reading, sculpture, singing
and making and playing musical instruments.
Our Eco-project continues
apace, with some great news of generous donations by Alexander
Rose Ltd., who have given us three eucalyptus
benches for the trail made from environmentally friendly sources,
and SITA Waste Management have given a tree – a dogwood – for
the area. Also, from the £50 donated by Wyevale Garden Centre
the committee is hoping to buy some bamboo posts which can be painted
in vibrant colours. The committee is also preparing a newsletter
for the school website – school@brockham.surrey.sch.uk
Finally,
Congratulations to our indoor athletics team who won the overall
tournament at The Ashcombe School against all other primary
schools in the area.

Last term was, as is usual for a Christmas term,
very busy. As well as all the Christmas preparations we had a very
informative
workshop on drug and alcohol abuse entitled Feeling High/Feeling
Low.
We were also treated to our annual Baroque to
Rock concert, and auditions took place for the School Production
to be performed
later this term.
The Eco School Committee really took off last
term too, with the first stage of building the Eco-trail well
supported by teachers, parents and pupils all putting in a great
physical effort to plant, dig, clear and lay paths. The results
so far are stunning, with much more yet to come.
The Christmas celebrations
were hugely enjoyed, with the Christmas Fair a great success, the
senior citizens enjoying their concert,
the parents concealing a proud tear at the Infant nativity production
and the School Carol Concert as well attended as ever!
And so we
now prepare for a new term, studying such projects as ‘Rocks
and Soils’ (the Lower Juniors), which will involve a trip
to Dorking caves and museum. We trust you all had a very enjoyable Christmas,
and like Brockham School, look forward to a happy, healthy and
successful New Year.

We return to school on 3rd September and this
year we are welcoming not only new pupils but also new teachers
to the school:
- Mr Steele, deputy head teacher who will also
be teaching Year 6
- Miss Smith teaching Year 1
- Miss Grzeszczak teaching Year 3, and
- Ms Oliver also teaching Year 3, as well as
being Lower Junior Co-Ordinator
We trust they will settle in well and wish them
all the best for their time at Brockham
Last year saw many fund-raising activities organised
by both pupils and Friends of Brockham School (FOBS), all of which
have raised a great deal of money not only for various charities,
but also for the school itself and our thanks go to all those who
have supported us in any way, particularly our Summer Fete.
Towards the end of last year the children began,
with great enjoyment and success, to swim in the new school pool,
and thi sterm it is our pleasure to announce the official opening
of the pool by HRH, The Earl of Wessex on the afternoon of Wednesday
10th September.
Other events this term include a trip by Year
6 to the Isle of Wight, Years 3 and 4 will be visiting Fishbourne
Roman Palace and at the end of the month our annual cycling proficiency
takes place.
We are also pushing forward with our Eco-Schools
Project aim of making our school more environmentally friendly.
The project, headed by Miss Harper and Miss Haywood, involves Years
4 and 5 and sets out to investigate the possibility of setting
aside and 'eco-area' within the school to celebrate the natural
environment. Although as yet the project is in its early stages
we are all very enthisiastic and excited by its potential and more
information will obviously be available as it progresses.
So another school year begins and we hope it
will be a happy and successful one for all our staff and pupils.
