In
October 2005, Mole
Valley District Council decided without informing Brockham
Parish Council or indeed even consulting with Brockham
Green Village Society, to remove the granite kerb (sets) along
the northern edge of the Village Green and replace it with
a run
over strip.
The problem was that parking on the north
side of the road narrowed the road and large delivery vehicles
continually damaged these sets which are costly to replace.
MVDC's solution was to create a 'run over'
strip which makes it easier for vehicles to pass.
It was clear that this would be little more
than an open invitation for people to park on the run over
strip. Mole Valley disagreed.
Parking on the Green is now a significant
problem, destroying the verges, encouraging more people to
park on all parts of the Green, creating a safety hazard and
making a naturally attractive area look like a car park.
It's not necessarily the fault of drivers
who have not been informed otherwise but myopic and ill conceived
planning on the part of Mole Valley.
Lorries, trucks, vans and coaches are just
some of the vehicles that are using the Green as a car park.
After discussions with MVDC's Parks Officer,
Brockham Parish Council and Brockham Green Village Society
it was agreed that a no parking white line be installed for
a six month trial to see if it has any effect.
Vehicles ignoring the no parking signs could
received a fine of up to £200.
Please be considerate - use the parking facilities at the
Royal Oak or the Duke's Head and do not park on any part of
the Common Land.
