Today is
Brockham Community Speed Watch

Brockham Village was the first rural Community Speed Watch scheme to be designated in November 2004.

It was one of 5 pilot areas which included Boxhill, Westcott, Headley, and Leigh.

It was set up in response to the alarmingly traffic speed that had grown through the village. A site survey along Middle Street showed an 85th percentile average of 49mph in a 30mph zone, with top speeds of 96mph!!!

A team of dedicated volunteers operated the scheme in conjunction with Surrey Police and the results to date have been very positive.

The 85th percentile figure has fallen by nearly 9mph and although a top speed has been recorded at 86mph the overall speeds at the high end have also fallen dramatically.

There are around 5,350 traffic movements a day through Brockham of which over 1,000 (20%) of these are goods vehicles.

Over 47% of these speeding vehicles are travelling above 35mph and goods vehicles are more likely to speed than any other vehicle.

Brockham is the largest scheme in the county accounting for over 73% of recorded offences. Over 1,700 vehicles have been recorded in the last year as driving in excess of 35mph and the majority have been from outside the community.

Community Speed Watch is now being rolled out across Surrey as a major police initiative and as this article is being written Betchworth, Charlwood, Newdigate are coming on stream.

If you want to help make a real difference in Brockham why not become a CSW volunteer. It takes only a small amount of time at your convenience and the impact is noticeable.

If you drive through Brockham then please take notice of the 30mph speed limit. High speeds are anti-social and threaten the lives of the vulnerable in our community.
